II. Are Power Steering Fluid and Hydraulic Oil the Same?

Hydraulic oil, as a multifunctional fluid, is used in various hydraulic systems, including hydraulic power steering systems. It is primarily used for energy transmission, while also possessing multiple functions such as anti-wear, lubrication, corrosion prevention, rust prevention, and cooling. Its characteristics include high viscosity and specific fluidity requirements, which allow hydraulic oil to effectively transmit force and provide protection within the system. Power steering fluid, on the other hand, is a special fluid specifically designed for automotive power steering systems. Through its hydraulic effect, it significantly reduces the effort required to operate the steering wheel, improving driving convenience. It shares similarities with automatic transmission fluid, brake fluid, and shock absorber fluid.
Although power steering fluid and hydraulic fluid share some similarities, their specialized characteristics and functions mean they are not interchangeable. However, in emergency situations, hydraulic fluid can be used as a temporary substitute in hydraulic power steering systems, but long-term use is not recommended. Therefore, when changing power steering fluid, you should choose a dedicated power steering fluid, not hydraulic fluid.
III. What fluid can replace power steering fluid?
Power steering fluid can be replaced with automatic transmission fluid because the operation of an automatic transmission is similar to that of a power steering system, and both power steering fluid and automatic transmission fluid primarily act as a buffer. However, it’s important to note that this is not suitable for all vehicle models. Many high-end models have complex steering systems, and it is recommended to use a dedicated power steering fluid when changing it to avoid unnecessary problems.
IV. What color is power steering fluid?
Power steering fluid comes in two types: mechanical (red) and electronic (white, possibly yellowish). The type of fluid you choose depends on whether your car has mechanical or electronic power steering. Furthermore, power steering fluid can vary in color depending on the brand, grade, and additives used. Most power steering fluids are brown or pink. Since the power steering pump operates at relatively low pressure, speed, and temperature, its requirements for fluid quality are not very stringent. Many auto repair shops actually use transmission fluid as a substitute, and it works perfectly fine.
