Are tire waxes harmful to tires? The impact of tire wax quality

I. Performance of Tire Wax

Tire wax, also known as tire retreading agent or tire blackening agent, comes in liquid and paste forms. Tire wax provides a certain degree of shine and protection for tires, combining cleaning, polishing, and protection. It thoroughly removes various stains and oil from tires; its unique rubber lubricant and UV stabilizer moisturize the tire sidewalls and maximally prevent tire surface aging, cracking, and fading. It can be used for cleaning and polishing the sidewalls of various motor vehicle rubber tires, making the tire surface blacker and shinier, restoring it to a like-new appearance.

II. Disadvantages of Inferior Tire Wax

Using inferior tire wax will have the opposite effect, corroding the tire surface and rims, accelerating tire aging, and making the tires more prone to attracting dust. Therefore, tire wax can be used, but it’s crucial to choose a reputable brand. Generally, car detailing shops, considering washing costs, primarily use these large, unregulated products. I personally recommend against applying tire wax during car washes at detailing shops. If you really want to use tire wax, I suggest buying a reputable brand and applying it yourself after washing your car.

III. Precautions and Methods for Using Tire Wax

  1. Method: Shake well before use; suitable for both dry and wet tires; spray evenly in a circular motion from about 15cm away from the tire; spread evenly with a brush and allow to dry completely (5-10 minutes); for exceptionally dirty tires, rinse with water first.

  2. Don’t completely dismiss tire wax. You can test the pH of the purchased tire wax with pH paper to check its acidity or alkalinity. Strongly acidic or alkaline waxes should not be used, as they will definitely harm the tires. Neutral waxes should be fine, at least not corrosive. Tire wax, like shoe polish, is beneficial for tire protection if the correct product is chosen.

  3. If using pH test paper is inconvenient, you can test it on your hand to see if it burns. If it does, don’t use it, or try a different car wash. Always clean the tires thoroughly before applying tire wax, otherwise they will turn yellow. Never use inferior tire wax.
