How to Install a Hidden Dash Cam
- Determine the Installation Location: The ideal position is close to the interior rearview mirror, such as between the mirror and the windshield, to achieve a central, wide filming angle with minimal obstruction of the front view . It is often recommended to install it on the right side of the interior rearview mirror, centered as much as possible, for a proper filming angle and reference value. Ensure it does not interfere with the adjustment of the rearview mirror .
- Plan the Wiring Route Based on Cable Length: Simulate the wiring path first to ensure the power cable is long enough for the chosen route .
- Tuck the Power Cable into the Headliner Gap: Once the location and route are set, start by tucking the dash cam’s power cable into the gap of the car’s headliner .
- Route Cable Through Door Seal and A-Pillar: After routing the cable along the headliner, gently pull down the door seal weatherstrip and carefully pry open the A-pillar trim panel (which is usually held by clips). The purpose of opening the A-pillar trim is not to place the wire inside the A-pillar (which might interfere with side curtain airbags in some models) but to allow the cable to pass behind it. Then, tuck the cable into the door weatherstrip, align the A-pillar clips, and gently tap the trim panel back into place .
- Continue Routing Downward: From the top of the A-pillar, route the cable downward along the door frame, continuing to tuck it into the seal weatherstrip until it reaches the bottom of the dashboard .
- Route Cable Behind Glove Box: Pass the power cable behind the glove compartment. Depending on the vehicle model, secure the cable behind the glove box or hide it behind the firewall or under the floor mat for a cleaner look .
- Conceal Wires Near Cigarette Lighter Socket: To minimize visible wires near the cigarette lighter socket, slightly loosen the screws of the lower center console trim, create a small gap, tuck the wire into the gap, and then tighten the screws. Adapt this step based on your vehicle’s specific design .
- Final Connection and Test: Plug the power cable into the cigarette lighter socket. Confirm that the dash cam powers on and starts normally, indicating a successful installation .
The entire installation process typically takes around 20 minutes . If the process seems complex, or if your vehicle has specific features like side air curtains in the A-pillar, it is advisable to seek professional installation .
