What does fault code B0023 mean?

B0023 Description: In the event of a side or frontal collision with sufficient force, the inflatable restraint sensor and diagnostic module (SDM) will allow current to flow through the deployment loop, thus deploying the right-side roof rail airbag. The SDM continuously performs diagnostic tests on the deployment loop to check for circuit continuity and short circuits to ground or voltage. A shorting bar is present in the right-side roof rail airbag connector, which shorts both the high and low voltage circuits when the connector is disconnected. This helps prevent unintended airbag deployment during servicing.

Symptoms of error code B0023 may include:

  • The SRS or “Airbag” indicator light on the dashboard is illuminated;
  • The curtain airbag fails to activate during a side collision;
  • An error appears when diagnosing with an OBD2 scanner.

Troubleshooting by Symptoms

SymptomPossible Solution
Illuminated SRS lightDiagnose and resolve the error code
Error during scanner diagnosisInspect and repair the curtain airbag circuit

Important! Even without obvious symptoms, the presence of code B0023 indicates a potential safety fault that requires immediate attention.

Main Causes of Error Code B0023

  • Damage or corrosion of the airbag connector;
  • Open or short circuit in the curtain airbag wiring;
  • Faulty curtain airbag itself;
  • Faulty airbag control module (SDM).

How to Fix B0023

Read the vehicle’s computer system using an OBD2 airbag scanner to diagnose the specific cause of the B0023 fault.

Inspect the wiring and connectors of the right-side roof rail airbag deployment loop for damage or corrosion. Repair or replace as needed.

Test the continuity and resistance of the appropriate roof rail airbag deployment loop to ensure it is functioning correctly.

Check the airbag control module and airbag sensors for malfunctions or faults. Replace if necessary.

Clear the B0023 code from the vehicle’s computer system and test the right-side roof rail airbag system to ensure it deploys correctly.

Tools required: OBD2 scanner; multimeter; a set of tools for removing trim panels; personal protective equipment.
