The correct steps for starting a vehicle’s engine.

Inserting the key and turning it all the way to start the engine is a common starting procedure for many drivers, but they often overlook the fact that the vehicle’s onboard computer has a self-check function.

Even with the now-popular one-button start system, you shouldn’t start the engine immediately, otherwise it will not only damage the battery and engine but also pose many safety hazards.

So how do you perform a pre-start self-check?

First, we need to understand that the keyhole generally has four positions, and what do they represent?

  1. The key is inserted and in the LOCK position;
  2. Turning the key to ACC: Connects power to some of the vehicle’s electrical components, such as the CD player and cigarette lighter;

  3. Turning the key to ON: Connects power to all electrical components in the car and begins the self-check;

  4. START: Ignition position; the key springs back to the ON position after successful ignition.

How to properly start a car:

You should first turn the key to the ON position and pause. At this time, the onboard computer’s self-check program starts, and many icons on your instrument panel will light up, such as the oil, brake, and ABS icons. You should wait until the flashing icons turn off before turning the key to the START position to ignite the engine.

If any icon remains lit, it means there is a problem with that part of the car, and you should have it repaired promptly instead of continuing to use it.

Self-check for vehicles with one-button start: Without pressing the brake, press the start button. The vehicle connects to the power supply and begins the self-check; the instrument panel icons light up; after the icons turn off, press the brake and start the vehicle.

Vehicle driving tips:

  •  Ignoring the self-check and directly starting the engine for a long time will not only damage the battery and engine, leading to electronic equipment malfunctions, but also pose many safety hazards; if the car’s power system is damaged and difficult to start, you should have a car jump starter ready.
  • The self-check time of the onboard computer is generally 6-10 seconds. During this time, you can fasten your seat belt and remind the passenger to also fasten their seat belt, then start the engine and slowly drive off.
