Is it necessary to install floor mats in a car?

What is car floor matting?

Car floor matting is generally a carpet-like material under the car seats, which is pre-installed in the car.  Once dirt or stains get on it, it’s difficult to clean. If a waterproof and easy-to-clean material is laid on top, cleaning becomes much easier. This protective layer is the floor matting.

Is car floor matting necessary? Is it good?

Some say that laying floor matting is inexpensive, easy to maintain, prevents the carpet from getting dirty when getting into the car on rainy days, and can also reduce noise; others say that installing floor matting is not environmentally friendly, releases toxic gases that harm the human body, and that in the summer, when there is high humidity, condensation from the air conditioning collects under the matting, preventing the moisture under the carpet from evaporating, which may accelerate rusting of the chassis.

In fact, everything has its advantages and disadvantages. Whether or not to install floor matting depends entirely on personal preference. Many high-end cars don’t have floor matting, opting for high-quality carpets instead.

How to choose car floor matting?

If you choose to install floor matting, you must choose a good brand. Good floor matting matches the shape of the original car chassis, has no seams, and has pre-reserved holes for seats, vents, and tracks. The edges are precise, not easily broken, and don’t require glue. The surface material is pure PVC, and the bottom is made of high-quality sound-insulating cotton: environmentally friendly, non-toxic, odorless, soundproof, anti-static, flame-retardant, easy to clean, and features fine workmanship, quick and convenient installation, and a reasonable price. Good brands usually have a warranty of 5 years or more. Otherwise, it’s better not to install it at all. Don’t be tempted by cheap options and install inferior floor matting with excessive benzene levels; that would harm more than just yourself.

How to distinguish between genuine and fake car floor matting!

Environmentally friendly car floor matting has no odor even when exposed to sunlight. Fake car floor matting emits a pungent odor when heated or exposed to sunlight, indicating formaldehyde release.

Check if it is soft, elastic, and tear-resistant. Fake floor matting tears easily and lasts less than a year.

Genuine car floor matting has no seams or stitching, and the back has a layer of moisture-proof and sound-insulating cotton.  Installation does not require glue.

Which is better: car floor matting or floor mats?

The advantage of floor matting is that it is waterproof.  Previously, many cars used floor matting, but now with the availability of full-coverage floor mats, most sedans no longer use floor matting. The floor mat is difficult to remove once installed, but you can easily replace the floor mats if you don’t like them. Floor mats have seams, and over time, cracks will inevitably appear, allowing water or moisture to seep in. Because the floor mat is not breathable, the water will get trapped, and since the car floor is made of metal, prolonged exposure to water can lead to serious consequences.

In fact, we recommend choosing high-quality car floor mats. Installing floor mats requires removing the seats, and floor mats often have an unpleasant odor and are prone to mold growth.  More importantly, some low-quality floor mats can cause secondary pollution inside the car, seriously endangering your health.
